How we teach with AI, how we build it into our tools, and how we keep teachers and schools in control.
AI is changing how schools teach computer science. Our approach is to make sure our usage of AI on CodeHS supports your school and district's learning goals, and gives you control over how it is implemented.
We give teachers control over what can be used in the classroom, and give districts control over making sure AI on CodeHS conforms to their policies. In addition, we make sure to build with appropriate safeguards for school usage, and uphold privacy and security best practices.
Some of our tools help teachers, like AI Grading, AI Creator, and Ask AI. Other tools may be available for students, like Smart Hints and Vibe Coding; however, any student-facing AI tool requires your teacher to enable it.
Districts have varying approaches to AI — some want to use every tool, and some want to proceed cautiously. Either way, you can configure CodeHS to match your school's approach.
We look forward to collaborating with our school and district partners to make sure we can use AI to enable the best possible student learning experiences.
Our AI tools are self-contained, and student data is not used to train the models.
AI never changes our commitment to student data privacy. CodeHS is fully COPPA-compliant, and our practices support your school's FERPA requirements.
The models run in our own private, isolated cloud environment. Student work is processed there and never sent to an outside AI company.
Student work is not used to train AI models—not ours, not anyone else’s.
If your district or state has a data privacy policy in place, we follow it. Districts can request deletion at any time.
District admins decide which CodeHS AI tools are available across their organization. They can turn individual tools on or off — or disable AI entirely.
Running CodeHS with AI tools turned off is fully supported.
Districts control which AI tools are available. If a tool is turned off at the district level, no school or teacher can turn it back on.
School settings follow district policy by default. CodeHS can help districts apply different settings to individual schools.
For student-facing tools, teachers choose whether to enable them by section or individual student.
Students see no student-facing AI tool unless their district allows it and their teacher enables it.

Using the AI Settings AppReview Smart Hints interactions in your sections and see what students are asking. Vibe Coding conversations appear in the Vibe Coding Student Threads dashboard.
Using the Hints AppVibe Coding and Ask AI use the same pool of AI credits and are subject to weekly and monthly usage limits. Smart Hints doesn't use AI credits; students can receive up to five hints per day.
