What first drew you to Plotly, and what did you hope to find here?

In my previous role as a Platform Engineer, I worked extensively with Dash Enterprise, managing both the underlying infrastructure and the day-to-day experience of our developers. That meant helping teams debug their code and building tools to get more out of Dash Enterprise, alongside the maintenance, upgrades, and ongoing improvements to developer experience. It also gave me the chance to work closely with Plotly’s own infrastructure and developer teams. This was a partnership that helped us maximize the business value we got from the platform. I really enjoyed working with the product, seeing the value it brought and the enthusiasm with which the support team responded to my questions about the product. I hoped to work closer to the product and make contributions to its growth.

When you think back to your first few weeks, what stands out most: a moment, a feeling, or a realization?

Everyone I interacted with was invested in enhancing the product and were really friendly. As a new starter, I found that anyone in the organization was willing to respond and provide help.

What was your very first project at Plotly, and which company value do you think it best represents?

My first priority was introducing myself to customers, understanding their journeys so far and familiarizing myself with their requirements. This allowed me to provide tailored solutions for each customer. I believe this embodies our value of curiosity; by proactively seeking to understand our customers, I was able to deliver personalized onboarding and training experiences.

How did your first project challenge you to be Creative, to think beyond the obvious or combine imagination with technical skill?

No two customers are the same at Plotly, which required me to combine multiple sources of information as well as engaging with customers directly to really understand the best way I could add value. This meant combining my technical knowledge with customer goals to ensure they were given solutions that met their needs.

In what ways did you need to be Scrappy, working smart, adapting fast, or finding a creative solution with limited time or resources?

Managing multiple customers has required being able to adapt and context-switch quickly. It involves balancing customer expectations with internal collaboration to identify solutions and discuss product enhancements that drive value.

How have you experienced Innovation firsthand at Plotly, whether through AI integration, team experimentation, or problem-solving?

At Plotly, the receptiveness to customer needs has really stood out. Customers often change their technical direction and require features that may not yet exist. However, the teams work together to deliver key features and provide workarounds until those features are released. Additionally, the company has recognized the growing trend of delivering “AI products” amongst various industries. Combining this with products and features that provide real value to our customers. It is innovation driven by improving the customer experience.

How has your Curiosity helped you learn or connect more deeply with your team or the product?

I enjoy understanding the problem as much as finding solutions. Whichever department I have interacted with have shared this curiosity and had a willingness to take time to explain not only what our solutions are, but why this direction was taken. I think this has also influenced the products because their developments are grounded in a desire to bring value. To provide value, I believe we have to be curious in order to understand the goal.

What does Honesty look like to you in the way Plotly teams communicate or make decisions?

Internal communications are extremely transparent; our channels and calls are open to be viewed internally. For me, honesty goes hand in hand with accountability, and I believe transparency allows any team member to contribute to a discussion. This allows for more informed business decisions. I also believe this transparency and accountability bleeds into our interactions with customers, to be clear when managing expectations and earning the trust of anyone I interact with, internal or external.

Where have you seen Execution come to life, moving ideas into action quickly but thoughtfully?

In so many ways. The solutions and infrastructure support teams work actively to provide answers for customer queries. They take time to ensure the solutions are tested, ensuring an idea or requirement is worked on to an enterprise standard. From my interactions with customers, their requirements are documented and the teams are willing to collaborate to ensure enterprise-level value is provided.

What’s one thing you’ve learned about yourself since joining Plotly?

I’ve learned that I can interact with a variety of stakeholders with different technical competencies in order to provide an excellent customer experience. This was especially important because I arrived from a primarily technical role, and I’ve learnt to combine my technical skills with customer-facing skills.

How has your understanding of Plotly’s mission or culture evolved over your first 90 days?

Having worked with Plotly from a client side, my first 90 days have really shown Plotly’s commitment to innovation and to providing value to customers. Every team member I have interacted with, wants to excel and continue to enhance our products.

What’s a proud moment or milestone that captures what these 90 days have meant to you?

I have been able to connect with multiple customers and provide solutions that solve real business problems. Working collaboratively with Plotly team members to help customers get the most out of our products, which are crucial to their business operations, is a significant milestone.

FIFA World Cup Plotly Challenge Winners

Thank you to all the community members that participated in the FIFA Plotly App Challenge. It was a pleasure witnessing the amazing apps that the community built.

After reviewing all the submissions, the Plotly judging committee has selected the top 3, 🥁…

🥇 1st place goes to Shail for the Statdium app (see GitHub repo). Shail’s app centralizes all our World Cup needs for information in one place: the upcoming games, the history of qualifications per country, a leaderboard for goal scorers, a fan pulse map, and even a list of hosting stadiums.

In addition, this app scores 10 over 10 for cleanliness and a professional look. Most UI elements even work perfectly on mobile, something which many of the other apps did not offer.

On a side note: running a Monte Carlo simulation on Canada winning the championship and seeing 0% was tough 🙂.

🥈 2nd place goes to Deepa for the FIFA Plotly Dash app (see GitHub repo). This application has a great balance of rich data while not overwhelming the viewer. The dynamic header, with the most important information, is great to have since it summarizes what’s essential for the user to know! The ELO ranking change is a fantastic graphic, and the match replay feature is a strong addition because it gives a quick history of the game.

🥉 3rd place goes to Yigitalp for the following FIFA Plotly Dash app (see GitHub repo). The app has very good visual clarity despite being information dense. We loved the unique travel planner and the highlighting of the active stadiums/scores on various dates.

The travel map is a unique feature that we didn’t see in other entries. That said, it has a fixed zoom that makes it difficult to map travel, since it’s not possible to zoom out to see all host cities.

FastAPI and Quart

Several weeks ago, Plotly officially released Dash 4.2, introducing first-class support for FastAPI and Quart as server backends alongside the traditional Flask default.

By simply updating the backend parameter in the Dash constructor, developers can seamlessly integrate Dash apps into existing enterprise services, eliminating the need for complex reverse proxies.

This highly requested update unlocks robust native asynchronous capabilities, enabling developers to build async callbacks, share API endpoints, and leverage newly introduced WebSocket callbacks for real-time, server-pushed UI updates.

Dash MCP

With Dash 4.3 you can turn your Dash app into the source of truth for LLMs.

Simply transform your app into a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server with a single line of code:

app = Dash(__name__, enable_mcp=True)

With this new capability, AI agents like Claude and ChatGPT can go into your app directly to fetch real, live data instead of making a guess.

Plotly 6.7 + Dash 4.4: Click & Hover Anywhere

The Plotly team has introduced a highly requested interactivity feature in our latest releases, allowing dcc.Graph components to capture click and hover events anywhere within a plotting area, even over blank space.

By enabling clickanywhere=True or hoveranywhere=True in the figure layout, applications unlock new event data payloads featuring exact graph coordinates (xvals, yvals) and specific axis identifiers (xaxes_id, yaxes_id).

This functionality opens the door for building advanced user experiences like custom drawing tools, measurement rulers, map pin placement, and multi-subplot targeting.

Recent Event: Databricks Data + AI Summit in San Francisco

We were excited to attend the Databricks Data + AI Summit for the fifth time in a row! Mingo Sanchez, Sam Tripp, Chris Parmer, and Dave Gibbon represented Plotly this year in San Francisco 🌉.

It was great to see so many longtime Plotly fans stop by the booth. One of the most common questions we heard was how Plotly works with Databricks in production environments. The answer: seamless support for read and write workflows, triggering jobs on Databricks clusters, inheriting Unity Catalog security via OAuth, and connecting across additional data sources like third-party APIs.

Recent Event: Data Driven Oil & Gas in Houston

Later in June, we traveled to Houston for the Reuters Oil & Gas conference, where Mingo Sanchez and Ian Dorish connected with data professionals across the sector.

A common theme was the complexity of modern analytics environments, particularly around data volume and fragmentation. Conversations centered on the need to make dashboards consistent, shareable, and scalable across the organization while keeping up with real-time data streams.

👉 AI Energy Consumption App built by community member, Aditya Shukla, using Plotly Studio. This app demonstrates how model architecture, hardware choices, training strategies, temporal patterns, and optimization decisions impact energy efficiency in neural network training.

👉 New York Oil and Gas Production App built by Plotly staff members, using Dash. This is a comprehensive overview of oil and gas wells across the state of New York from the 1960’s.

👉 Overnight Index Swap (OIS) MidCurves Bonds dashboard built by community member, Mike Kipnis, using Dash. This is an example of an interactive utility to update OIS curves, calculate the mid-curves, and setup and price bonds.

Plotly IBCS Challenge Winners

Thank you to all the community members that participated in the Plotly — IBCS challenge. We loved seeing the variety of submissions, and the quality was phenomenal.

After reviewing all the submissions, the Plotly team has selected the top 3, 🥁…

🥇 1st place goes to Deepa for the prompt she created to replicate the IBCS 09 Chart. The final chart created by Plotly Studio was almost identical to the original one.

🥈 2nd place goes to ChartCrimes for the Plotly Studio prompt that replicates the fourth IBCS chart. Although there were some overfitting results due to the detail of the prompt, the final chart was very similar to the original.

🥉 3rd place goes to Eszter for the prompt written to replicate the 07 IBCS chart. Although the months were labeled on top of the chart instead of the bottom of the chart, this line chart is fairly similar to the original chart.

Congratulations to our winners and thank you again to all the community members who participated in this challenge.

Plotly Cloud Teams

As a reminder, the quickest and easiest way to publish and share your Dash apps with others, is through Plotly Cloud. For those participating in the Power BI Plotly challenge, you will need to publish your app to Plotly Cloud as well. When you are finished building your Plotly Studio app, click the publish button, located in the top right corner. If you’re building a Dash app, simply install dash cloud (pip install “dash[cloud]”) and click the “Plotly Cloud” → “Publish App” buttons.

Plotly Cloud recently added the capability to work in teams within the teams workspaces. For example, you might want to collaborate with your team members in your data analytics department. Simply create your team and invite your colleagues via email address. Those colleagues without Plotly Cloud accounts will see your Team as soon as they sign up to Cloud and will immediately be able to access everything shared with them in the Team.

In addition, a few more recent updates expand the capabilities of Plotly Cloud:

• Published apps can use Python libraries to connect to data that lives outside of Plotly Cloud (read more).
• Enhanced Revision History Tracking. Now you are able to know exactly who made changes to your projects with new uploader information displayed in revision history
• There is better onboarding for anyone you invite with intro banners
• You can access Dash Enterprise (DE) documentation using Cloud for Enterprise accounts or DE accounts

💼 Plotly at the Gartner Data & Analytics Summit 2026

We spent last week at the Gartner Data & Analytics Summit in Orlando, where the most common reaction when people learned Plotly is the most widely used Python charting library was: “Oh, that’s you!”

Turns out a lot of senior data leaders have history with our open-source tools but didn’t realize we’ve evolved into an AI-native platform.

The line that started the most conversations? “Your BI isn’t broken. It’s just from 2016.” At a conference where frustration with Power BI and Tableau was hardly a secret, attendees were particularly interested in how Plotly Studio connects directly to Power BI semantic models, preserving data investments while unlocking the customization and flexibility traditional BI tools can’t provide. Google BigQuery

Google BigQuery is a serverless, highly scalable cloud data warehouse designed for fast SQL queries on massive datasets. Connecting to Google BigQuery requires a service account JSON key generated from the Google Cloud Console.

Oracle

Oracle Database is a multi-model database management system known for its scalability, security, and enterprise features. Connecting to Oracle Database requires your host address, port, service name, and login credentials.

PostgresSQL

Connecting PostgreSQL requires your host address, port, database name, and login credentials. Follow these steps to connect to your PostgreSQL data and visualize it with Plotly Studio.

Microsoft SQL Server

Microsoft SQL Server is an enterprise-grade relational database management system. Connecting to Microsoft SQL Server requires your host address, port, database name, and login credentials.

Motherduck

MotherDuck is a serverless cloud analytics platform powered by DuckDB. Connecting MotherDuck requires a MotherDuck access token, which can be generated in a few steps from your MotherDuck dashboard.

Snowflake

Connecting Snowflake takes about five minutes. Before starting, you’ll need your Account Identifier and login credentials, plus a quick check with your Snowflake admin to confirm which authentication method your organization uses.

What do you do at Plotly?

I spread the good word about Plotly! As the Business Development Manager, I lead a team that engages data science, engineering, and analytics leaders to proactively educate the market on the value of Plotly. We start conversations that lead to better solutions for data teams, and strategically bring the Plotly team in at the right time in those conversations.

What three words describe your Plotly experience?

Creativity, growth, curiosity.

What’s your favorite work-from-home snack or beverage?

I’m really into sardines lately. Judge if you must, but they are very high in protein! My pantry has about four different varieties currently stocked.

If you were to describe Plotly as a color or a flavor, what would it be and why?

The first thing that comes to mind is bubble gum ice cream. Partly because the bubble gum reminds me of our logo, but also because there’s no shortage of exciting projects when you’re working at Plotly. I’ve gotten to do so many different things here that I wouldn’t have been able to do at other companies!

What’s your favorite part about working at Plotly?

No two conversations are alike — I get to support customers from small startups to Fortune 500 companies, all over the world, in every industry across the board. As a curious person who loves learning, it really scratches the itch.

How has Plotly shaped your perspective on remote work or data visualization?

I love Plotly’s remote work approach. Plotly hired me while I was traveling the country, living in a van. It was refreshing to work at a company that supported that. I’ve settled into a “real” home now, but that first year was always a fun game of “Where’s Waldo (Erica) today?!”

Most memorable team activity?

A member of our Sales Engineering team led a Social Club virtual gathering a while back, where everyone brought their dogs, and that was a good time. I vote for more animals on Zoom calls.

What’s your favorite hobby?

I just started playing a monthly poker night in my neighborhood — I’m hoping to sharpen those skills!

Proudest accomplishments at Plotly?

I’m very proud of helping Plotly grow from initially only an inbound sales team to an outbound growth machine. We’ve been able to transition to the “hard part” of sales, which is, instead of sitting back and waiting for leads to come to us, we go out and find people who need to know about Plotly but never would have otherwise found us on their own. It’s not for the faint of heart; my team has to weather a lot of rejection, but it fosters a really supportive environment because we have to encourage each other through the challenge — celebrate together when we win and not take ourselves too seriously when we fail.

What’s one Plotly feature you wish more people knew about?

PLOTLY STUDIO. Hands down. AI-native data analytics is a very exciting place to be right now, and it’s so cool that someone like me, who really has no technical chops, can build a dashboard that (a year ago) would have taken a skilled Python developer hours, if not days.

The goal ahead now is getting that news about Plotly Studio to reach beyond the technical audience we’ve long been known for, and out to a whole new category of non-technical users that can now build pixel-perfect Python-backed data apps with ease.

What are you most excited about for the future of Plotly or your team?

It’s hard to think about “the future” of anything tech-related right now and not land on AI in some way. It feels like the beginning of the internet all over again. I’m excited to see how AI accelerates the Plotly products as well as how it accelerates my team to have meaningful conversations with so many more people than we ever could have before.

I’m an “expert” when it comes to Plotly, but I have to translate the value to industries I don’t necessarily work in daily with a message that resonates with them. AI tools accelerate my learning about what matters to someone uniquely (visualizing financial data vs someone analyzing scientific research results) so that I’m not spamming them with outreach that lacks relevance.

How do you stay creative or innovative in your role?

I really think the best way to stay creative at work is to stay creative outside of work. When I’m not at my laptop 9–5, you can probably find me renovating some section of my house :) Working with my hands and using a different part of my brain gives me the balance to bring that creative energy back to Plotly.

What advice would you give to someone aspiring to work in Sales at Plotly?

The best salespeople don’t necessarily have the most sales experience. Don’t discount your knowledge, even if it’s not in sales. My first manager told me this when she hired me with no experience at all. She said she knew I would be good at business development because my time as a classroom teacher would help me communicate complex concepts in a simple way, my time as a whitewater rafting guide meant I would bring some fun and charm to my conversations, and my time as a fitness trainer meant I knew how to push hard and work toward goals.

If you’re self-motivated and you love helping people, you’ve got the stuff to work in Sales at Plotly.

Where is the next place you’d like to travel?

Japan is very high on the list! I’ve heard the food is top-notch (a very big part of travel for me). I’m a sucker for a good spa experience, and they’re known for onsens, and I’ve heard the culture is very kind, considerate, and values quality. It checks all the boxes, but that flight time has been holding me back. Maybe 2026 is finally the year to go — we will see.

The International Business Communication Standards (IBCS) provide a universal framework for clear, consistent business charts, and we aim to harness Plotly Studio’s power to make these standards accessible to everyone. Your mission is to choose an IBCS chart from their official examples, recreate it in Plotly Studio with a similar dataset, and craft a comprehensive prompt that others can reuse. Last Friday, our community kicked off this initiative by brainstorming and drafting initial content, including:
